The saying "Deniz cok, balik yok" is based upon an experience I had while hitchhiking in Turkey back in 1965. I had just hitchhiked from India, and arrived at the Black Sea coast with great expectation of having a nice fish supper. So I went into this little restaurant overlooking the sea, and asked, in my broken Turkish, for fish, which is "balik". The waiter answered, "Balik yok", which means "No fish". I looked at him incredulously, motioned to the great expanse of sea behind us, and murmured "Deniz cok, balik yok?", meaning there's a lot of sea but no fish?" The waiter laughed, and nodded with appropriate irony, "Deniz cok, balik yok!" Since then, this little phrase has seemed like a little mini- poem to me, commenting upon the sad environmental state of our world, so I keep it in memory. By the way, the little mark under the "c" gives that letter the sound of "ch".
